A systematic mapping of accessibility and usability in the process of development of digital games for the elderly

Abstract

This study explored how, when and where accessibility and usability are approached during digital game development aiming the elderly users. We covered 20,270 initial results, from which we sampled 1,755 and obtained 46 publications after the mapping process. Our results evidenced a preference of the field for studies about evaluation of accessibility and/or usability in this domain. It also suggests that studies only approached accessibility during digital game development for the elderly when they also approached usability. Our analysis showed a significant (p − value < .01) higher number of studies approaching usability (43) in comparison to accessibility (11). We suggest research questions for future systematic reviews in the field.

Flávia de Souza Santos é mestranda pela Universidade de São Paulo - São Carlos/SP, no programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Matemáticas e de Computação - ICMC (Instituto de Ciências Matemáticas e de Computação). Bacharela em Ciência da Computação pela Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA - 2016). Técnica em Informática pelo Centro Federal de Ensino Tecnológico de Minas Gerais (CEFET-MG, 2012). Tem experiência na área de Ciência da Computação, com foco em Tecnologia na Educação, Ambientes Virtuais de Aprendizagem. Atualmente trabalhando com Interação Humano Computador, mais especificamente com avaliação de acessibilidade, usabilidade e jogabilidade de jogos digitais para o público idoso

André de Lima Salgado, Universidade de São Paulo

André de Lima Salgado é Mestre em Ciências de Computação e Matemática Computacional pela Universidade de São Paulo (USP) e Bacharel em Sistemas de Informação pela Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA), tendo também atuado como pesquisador visitante na University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT, Canadá). Atualmente, ele cursa seu doutoramento no programa de  Ciências de Computação e Matemática Computacional da USP. Suas pesquisas abordam temas de Interação Humano-Computador, como métodos de inspeção de usabilidade, com especial atenção à inspeção por avaliação heurística. Renata Pontin de Mattos Fortes, Universidade de São Paulo

Renata P. M. Fortes é professora do Departamento de Ciências de Computação na Universidade de São Paulo, campus de são Carlos. Possui doutorado na área de Engenharia Web pelo Instituto de Física de São Carlos, da Universidade de São Paulo, e mestrado e graduação pela Universidade de São Paulo em São Carlos.  Atualmente é professora associada da Universidade de São Paulo. Tem experiência na área de Ciência da Computação, com ênfase em Engenharia de Software, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: engenharia de web, projetos de software livre, acessibilidade na web, interação usuário-computador  e processos de software.  Tem diversas publicações em períodicos, conferências e capítulos de livros na área de Interação Humano-Computador.
