A survey on accessibility guidelines for users with autism: a broad understanding of the relevance and completeness

Resumo

The heterogeneity of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) requires providing everyday activities and interventions adapted according to the characteristics of each individual. Digital Solutions (software, apps, websites, etc.) can support this adaptation to favor the development and expand the abilities of these specific users. However, it is necessary to ensure the quality of these resources. From this perspective, accessibility recommendations for users with autism are available to guide developers and evaluation teams on the development of suitable digital solutions. This paper describes the results of an online exploratory survey about the relevance, suitability, and understandability of accessibility guidelines for ASD. The survey targeted different profiles, including individuals with ASD; parents or legal guardians; practitioners who work with this population; ergonomists and software developers; and researchers who are interested in this subject. The paper presents and discusses the result of 440 valid answers from more than five countries.
