Color Contrast Compliance: Investigating Constrast Requirements in Brazilian Websites

Resumo

In Brazil, all websites available on mobile devices need to be accessible. ABNT NBR 17060 has several requirements that are considered legal and mandatory for all websites accessed on mobile devices. In this regard, this research analyzed the 250 most relevant websites in the country according to Semrush internet traffic service, to understand and report adherence to the color contrast requirement in the primary buttons of these Brazilian websites, which is one of the mandatory requirements of the technical standard. The analysis was done manually, considering the background color of the primary button and its typeface. Other aspects were analyzed, such as the website’s purpose and the button’s purpose. The significant results show that even among the most relevant websites, 34% (85) of them do not follow the required contrast parameter in the primary button of the site. The two most problematic colors are Orange (20%, 17) and Light Blue (18.8%, 16). The most problematic combination between button color and font is Orange and White (23.5%, 20), followed by White and Light Blue (22.%, 19). Results show that there may be a preference for matching the color used in the product or service brand with the color used in the button, rather than following accessibility parameters regarding contrast. On the positive side, 66% (165) of the websites comply with ABNT NBR 17060 when observing contrast aspects by looking at the button’s background and font colors. There are sectors less and more affected by the contrast situation. The best sectors analyzed are Search Engines and Streaming, where all analyzed websites follow the necessary parameters. On the other hand, there is no adherence to the norm in Recipe and Religious websites. In conclusion, there is still a need to improve and advocate for more accessible websites in Brazil, as even the top 250 do not fully respect the ABNT standard in favor of people with visual disabilities.
