An image is worth nothing without words: A study on the use of Alternative Text in Brazilian News Websites
Abstract
Introduction: Alternative text is a fundamental element for ensuring full comprehension of visual content by users with visual impairments. Objective: This study investigates the implementation of this tool across 38 Brazilian news portals. Methodology: The adopted methodology consisted of a systematic analysis of three distinct categories of news content: (1) images of people, (2) representations of situations, and (3) photographs of places. Results: The results reveal a significant deficiency in the implementation of this accessibility tool. In many cases, there was a complete absence of alternative text or, when present, overly simplifed descriptions that failed to adequately convey the informational context of the images.
