Between Norms and Practices: A Study on the Involvement of Computing with Research Ethics Committees in Brazil
Abstract
Introduction: This study analyzes how the Computing community in Brazil relates to Research Ethics Committees (RECs), whose approval is mandatory for research involving humans, but still encounters resistance. Objective: To investigate the field’s perceptions, practices, and challenges regarding the CEP/CONEP system, identifying ethical dilemmas and possibilities for moral advancement. Methodology or Steps: Interpretive research, mixed approach, with a questionnaire (85 responses) and interviews (20 participants), analyzed for content and discourse. Results: The majority values RECs but adopts inconsistent practices; ethical relativism, lack of knowledge, and criticism of the healthcare feld emerge. Strategies include greater participation of Computing in RECs, training activities, and institutional clarity regarding requirements.
