The Proceedings of the 1st Brazilian Symposium on Systematic and Automated Software Testing (SAST 2016) bring the papers selected and presented in the city of Maringá/PR, Brazil, from September 19 to 23, 2016, as part of the 7th Brazilian Congress on Software: Theory and Practice (CBSoft 2016). In this issue, the proceedings include 15 full papers. All the papers received at least three reviews. The event's program committee was coordinated by André Takeshi Endo (UTFPR) and Márcio Eduardo Delamaro (USP), who organized this volume. The articles in this volume were submitted on 07/08/2016, accepted for publication on 08/08/2016, with the final version submitted on 08/15/2016.
