A Study on the Difficulties Faced by Visually Impaired People in Social Networking Applications

Abstract

With the advance of social networks, there is a growing need to make these platforms accessible to people with visual impairments. Despite recent efforts, current accessibility tools are not fully aligned with the platforms, limiting the satisfactory experience of these users. This study investigates the challenges visually impaired people face when using social networks through an online survey with a form and reviews on Google (Play Store). Our aim is to identify the main barriers and propose improvements that promote the inclusion and autonomy of these people on the leading social media platforms. The results indicate that Instagram and TikTok present the most significant challenges for people with visual impairments, suggesting that both platforms must improve various aspects of their interfaces.
