The Proceedings of the 21st Thesis and Dissertation Contest (CTD 2008) bring the papers selected and presented in the edition of the event held in Belém/PA, Brazil, from July 12 to 18, 2008, as part of the 28th Brazilian Computing Society Congress (CSBC 2008), which had the theme "Grand Challenges of Computing." In this issue, the proceedings include 06 Doctoral Theses and 08 Master's Dissertations. These papers were selected through a peer review. The event's Chairs, Teresa Ludermir (UFPE) and Aldebaro Klautau (UFPA), organized this volume.
