A Study on the Usability of Academic Software Products and its Implications for Computing Teaching

Abstract


According to the Brazilian Association of Information and Communication Technology Companies (Brasscom), a degree in Computer Science (CC) has been one of the main qualification paths sought by those interested in working in the technology sector in the country. Still according to her, the development of systems and interfaces is one of the key skills cultivated throughout the CC course, enabling graduates to create intuitive and efficient technological solutions. Based on this context, this work aims to evaluate the usability of academic software products and investigate whether what is being produced by students is aligned with the professional demands they will encounter when entering the industry. To this end, we intend to analyze the Federal Education Network, with a specific focus on the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Ceará (IFCE). Within this scope, all software products developed by students of the Bachelor of Computer Science (BCC) and presented in the Course Completion Works (TCCs), defended within the institution, will be evaluated. The evaluation will use as a basis the heuristic set proposed by Nielsen and will be applied to an initial set of 244 TCCs, distributed across four different campuses of the institution. As a research methodology, the Goal/Question/Metric (GQM) will be used.
