Resumo

Supervised Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) methods achieve high accuracy but require costly domain-specific training. Despite the popularity of Vision-Language Models and general Optical Character Recognition systems offering theoretical zero-shot capabilities, their effectiveness on constrained real-world meters remains unexplored. We evaluated the zero-shot performance of seven models (PyTesseract, Keras-OCR, EasyOCR, PARSeq, GOT-OCR 2.0, DeepSeek-VL2 and Qwen2.5-VL) on the UFPR-AMR and Copel-AMR datasets. Results show supervised recognition rates average 95.87%, outperforming the best zero-shot model, which averaged 64.86% across both datasets. This accuracy gap makes generalist models currently unsuitable for AMR.
