Resumo

This work investigates the impact of text representations on data complexity and classification performance. Five representation techniques (TF-IDF, Word2Vec, BERT, SBERT, and E5) and five classifiers were evaluated on three Portuguese text classification datasets from distinct domains. Beyond traditional performance metrics, complexity measures based on Instance Hardness were employed to analyze the quality of the generated feature spaces. The results show a consistent relationship between lower complexity and higher predictive performance. TF-IDF achieved the best overall results in most scenarios, while the effectiveness of contextual embeddings varied according to the characteristics of the dataset. The findings indicate that complexity metrics provide valuable insights for understanding and evaluating text representations.
