Automatic Detection and Counting of Podocytes by Color Segmentation in Microscopic Images
Abstract
Podocytes are a type of cell located in the kidneys, which act as a crucial point in the process of fi ltration of substances performed by the renal system. According to reports of morphometric measures in the kidneys of patients with hypertension or type 1 or 2 diabetes, renal biopsies support the concept that the reduced number of podocytes is associated with the development of glomerulosclerosis, then the detection and automatic estimation of the number of podocytes could aid in the clinical decision-making process. This work presents a method of automatic detection and counting of podocytes based on color information in optical microscopy images generated by the analysis of renal tissue sections.
