Abstract

3D printing is a widely used technology in digital manufacturing, however, unexpected interruptions, such as filament breakage, can compromise the printing quality and waste time and resources. This paper presents the development of an automated system for filament breakage detection in 3D printers, using an infrared sensor and an ESP32 microcontroller. This sensor tracks the rotation of the spool by detecting color variation between the black of the spool and the white stickers. If the system detects the absence of this variation within a programmed time interval, it triggers an alert via whatsApp message to the user and automatically shuts down the printer using a relay. This approach contributes to the automation and efficiency of the 3D printing process, preventing waste and optimizing the power consumption.
