Abstract

Monitoring systems are important for debugging and analyzing Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In passive monitoring, a monitoring network is deployed in order to capture and analyze packets sent by the network to be monitored (target network). EPMOSt is an Energy-efficient Passive MOnitoring System for WSNs that uses a sniffer election mechanism to reduce the energy consumption of the monitoring network. In this way, the lifetime of the monitoring network is extended. In this paper, the sniffer election mechanism proposed in EPMOSt is evaluated by conducting experiments with a WSN simulator in order to compare with the results obtained from experiments performed in a testbed. We aim at analyzing both ways of WSNs evaluation in order to point out better directions for experiments in WSNs.
