How Are Aesthetic Used and Applied to Design Educational Games? A Systematic Literature Study

Abstract

Digital games have emerged as a new teaching strategy, but how do researchers utilize and debate aesthetics in this area? This study specifically investigates the use of aesthetics in educational digital games, collecting information on their application and related aspects. The research integrated relevant databases on the subject, followed by a systematic mapping to gather data on aesthetics discussed by researchers. In the search phase, 758 studies were found; however, after applying evaluation criteria, 18 were deemed relevant for this research. The results analyzed both articles on game development and theoretical works, addressing 12 questions ranging from the age of players to the theoretical aesthetic approach used. These findings offer insight into the application and importance of aesthetics in educational digital games.
