Endgame for Corruption: Framework for the Design of Digital Games aimed at Combating Corruption - CTDGames 2024
Abstract
Corruption is a phenomenon deeply rooted in social relations, bringing woes and afflictions to humanity across diverse nations and institutions around the globe. Therefore, the process of combating corruption must involve structured popular participation, grounded and supported by critical analysis. Considering the capacity of Serious Digital Games (SDGs) to convey values and knowledge, they can be utilized as tools for citizen awareness work regarding social values and the populace's role in overseeing the State. However, the process of SDG design is still unclear, particularly concerning the goal of fostering reflection during gameplay, an essential element in creating new perspectives on corruption. Thus, this work presents a framework artifact to support the design of games enabling players to learn and reflect on corruption-related topics, called the Endgame for Corruption Framework (EgC). The research was conducted through the Design Science Research (DSR) paradigm and was organized into two iterative cycles. The framework was evaluated through quasi-experimental studies, and it was observed that the engaging games generated by EgC were capable of imparting knowledge and generating reflection on corruption in an immersive and interactive manner. Consequently, this research contributes to society's awareness and the evolution of a more open, digital, and, above all, transparent world. The contributions also extend to disciplines aiming to address corruption-related themes and the field of game culture, as it deals with social relations and the significance of game mechanics and dynamics.
