Abstract

I had the honor to serve as President of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) from 1987 to 1989. As the society celebrates 30 years of existence, each former President of the society was asked to reflect on his/her tenure at the helm of this important organization. This paper provides some background on the Brazilian computing scenario in the period that immediately preceded my administration and discusses how it impacted our goals and our actions at the time.
