Application of Serious Games based on Virtual Reality for Rehabilitation of Patients with Parkinson's Disease through a Wrist Orthosis

Abstract


A chronic disease that deserves attention from health professionals and public policies is Parkinson's disease (PD), as it can affect the quality of life of people and their families. This work presents an application of serious games and Virtual Reality (VR) for the treatment of muscle stiffness in patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) through integration with a wrist orthosis. The application consists of the serious game of adapted Boccia integrated with the robotic device of a wrist orthosis for the treatment of PD motor systems. In addition to assisting the patient in rehabilitation through physical therapy, he also supports the professional responsible for analyzing the patient's evolution. It is noted that technology has an increasing and important influence in the social environment, and the use of this technological evolution applied to basic needs of society can bring a better quality of life and improvement of the usual methods.
