FSP – Functional Story Point - A Functional Size Estimation Method

Abstract


This article presents a standardized, repeatable, and auditable functional size estimation method, expressed in terms of Functional Story Points (FSP), to be used in User Stories, characterized as functional requirements. FSP, combined with hours worked and team and environment characteristics, allows for performance and quality calculations, enabling comparisons between teams and organizations that adopt the same method. It enables the application of statistical process control, essential for effective planning and monitoring in organizations seeking maturity in software development. Additionally, it presents a tool to support functional size estimation in terms of FSP and planning and monitoring.
