Note Block World: An online community for sharing Minecraft note block music
Resumo
Note Block Studio (NBS) is a music creation application for Minecraft, a critically acclaimed video game. It can transform a musical arrangement created in the app into a circuit that plays the song in-game, eliminating the need for a player to build it manually. Over time, a prominent online community has formed around NBS. One of their most frequent requests was a central, public space to discover NBS songs made by other users. Current sharing methods have a few shortcomings, including poor discoverability, lack of native support for NBS files, and difficult long-term preservation. We present Note BlockWorld, a website in which anyone can share, discover, and listen to note block music created with NBS. It lets users browse songs, easily listen to them in NBS, and upload their own creations under a Creative Commons license. Since its release, over 3 000 songs have been uploaded by 1 000 unique artists. To assess the website’s usability, we conducted a survey using the System Usability Scale (SUS) and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), with responses from 34 users collected over 14 days. The results revealed a SUS score of 76.8 (B+) and generally satisfactory TAM results, which demonstrate a positive reception of NBW among the note block community — although user feedback revealed some relevant objections to using it widely, which we plan to address in upcoming work. Overall, we believe NBW can contribute positively to the future preservation of note block creations.
