Numéria: An educational game for exercises in basic mathematical operations and Computational Thinking

Abstract

This article presents “Numéria: The Island of Numbers”, an educational game developed for mobile devices, aimed at facilitating the understanding of basic mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) among 4th-grade Elementary School students. The game is based on the theories of Narrative Learning and Meaningful Learning, providing a playful and engaging environment. The game's narrative involves a knight who must solve mathematical puzzles scattered throughout the scenario to free the inhabitants of Numéria, who have been turned into stone statues by the wizard Multiplus. To solve these challenges, strategies employing the pillars of Computational Thinking will be used.
