The Proceedings of the 31st Thesis and Dissertation Contest (CTD 2018) bring the selection of Theses and Dissertations in the area of Computation of the country completed, defended, and approved, from January 1 to December 31, 2017. The CTD occurred in Natal, from July 22 to 26, as part of the 38th Brazilian Computing Society Congress (CSBC 2018) which had the theme "Computing and Sustainability".The theses and dissertations that competed in this edition were evaluated according to the scientific and technological results generated by the work, as well as its potential impact on society and in the area of Computation. The top three entries received an award at the awards ceremony during CSBC. The authors of these papers were invited to publish an English version of the Thesis (duly adapted) in a book published in partnership with the publisher Springer. The event's was coordinated by Simone Diniz Junqueira Barbosa (PUC-Rio), who organized this volume. The articles in this volume were submitted on 02/28/2018, accepted for publication on 04/27/2018, with the final version submitted on 04/30/2018.
