Evaluation of the Impact of Central Core Utilization in SDM-EON with 7-Core Fibers

Abstract


This paper evaluates the utilization of the central core in elastic optical networks with spatial division multiplexing in fibers with 7 cores. It highlights the issue of crosstalk, where signals in neighboring cores interfere with each other. Using algorithms for the RMCSA (Routing, Modulation, Core, and Spectrum Assignment) problem, the study analyzes high and low crosstalk scenarios across different network topologies, measuring the impact through blocking probabilities (PBC) and their causes. Numerical results indicate that not using the central core leads to a reduction in PBC by up to 24% in the topologies and algorithms considered.
