Transforming Mathematics Teaching in Basic Education: The Impact of Augmented and Virtual Reality Technologies

Abstract

This article explored the integration of immersive technologies, such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), in mathematics education at the elementary level, focusing on how these technologies can transform traditional pedagogical methods. The main objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational game developed in Unity, aimed at teaching the four fundamental mathematical operations to elementary students. The method adopted consisted of a bibliographic research, which involved analyzing recent literature to explore the impact and effectiveness of AR and VR in education. Fundamental works such as Tori, Hounsell, and Kirner (2020) on the potentialities of virtual reality and Delgado Lopes et al. (2019) on the application of augmented reality in the educational context were examined. The review of the studies showed that the use of interactive interfaces and game mechanics, designed through Unity, can significantly improve students' understanding and engagement in mathematics. It was concluded that AR and VR not only reinforce mathematical learning but also meet the diverse learning needs of students, promoting a more inclusive education.
