A comparative study of the ocular behavior of students in face-to-face and online teaching

Abstract

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for disease prevention measures, schools and colleges have implemented Internet-mediated teaching (online teaching). Eye tracking is a technique that records an individual's eye movements, calculating where he is looking at any given time. This work investigates the ocular behavior of 10 public school students aged between 15 and 17 years old, submitted to face-to-face teaching (5 students) and online teaching (5 students). The 2 groups attended a 1 lecture lasting 32 minutes and their eye movements were tracked. The knowledge of each student on the presented subject was evaluated before and after. The results show that the 2 groups learned satisfactorily. Regarding the ocular behavior, it was observed that the 2 groups showed a similar behavior, with greater concentration of the gaze on the teacher's face. However, this concentration was not the same: in face-to-face teaching, the teacher received 30.52% of the total fixation, while in remote teaching the percentage was 23.40%.
