Abstract

This paper presents a framework whose goal is to increase the energy efficiency of smart grids applications, focusing on the domains of Condition Monitoring Systems (CMS) and Power Quality (PQ). The key idea is the adoption of a Wireless Sensors and Actuators Network (WSAN), based on the concepts of data fusion and cooperation. A partial evaluation of the framework was carried out focusing on an application of the PQ domain. Experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of the framework in increasing the energy efficiency of the PQ application and quantified its overhead in terms of the WSAN computational resources, energy and communication.
