HACKatie: The Hackathon as a strategy to encourage women in STEM fields

Abstract


This paper exposes the development of the second edition of the programming marathon, also known as Hackathon, held by the UFAL extension project entitled: "Katie: saindo do buraco negro e impulsionando as meninas para a computação", which aims to motivate, support and promote the inclusion of women in STEM fields. The event was held remotely and organized by project members and volunteers. This Hackathon and its predecessor had an exclusively female target audience of various ages, educational levels and locations. Were observed an increase of participation between the editions, which shows the interest of participants in initiatives that encourage personal and professional development in STEM.
