Elastic Optical Networks: Planning and Optimization
Abstract
This paper presents an efficient method for spectrum allocation in optical networks. The method shows that a spectrum allocation without the wavelength grid is more efficient than traditional ones, which use fixed spectrum allocation. This new concept is based on OFDM and is known as Spectrum-Sliced Elastic Optical Path Network (SLICE) or Elastic Optical Networks. In this new type of network architecture, the lightpath bandwidth can be elastic in order to best attend the traffic demand. In this paper, some optimization criterion are used to properly route the traffic (with and without grooming) in this new architecture. Simulations were performed for a 6-node network as well as large networks. The results evidence the economy of spectrum when traffic grooming is employed and show the benefits of the proposed method when compared with traditional optical networks.References
