The focus was interviews from a sample of 40 children in the range of 8 to 14 years old attending public and private schools of the ABC of São Paulo. Using quantitative methods, it was developed to clarify the main motivations for cell phone use and which were the main functionalities of the device that were indicated as preferential. Special attention was given to accessing the internet through the mobile phone and its impact on social networking. Results show that the children interviewed use their cell phones as an essential means of communication, and this can be observed in different age groups regardless of the profiles of social distinction.
