The Proceedings of the 1st Brazilian Workshop on Social Network Analysis and Mining (BraSNAM 2012) bring the papers selected and presented in the edition of the event held in Curitiba/PR, Brazil, from July 16 to 19, 2012, as part of the 32nd Brazilian Computing Society Congress (CSBC 2012) which had the theme "Computing and Innovation: expanding frontiers to solve challenges in Brazil". In this issue, the proceedings include 16 full papers and 24 short papers. These papers were selected through a double-blind peer review process, from a total of 53 papers submitted, which implied an acceptance rate of 75%. The event's program committee was coordinated by Jonice Oliveira (UFRJ) and Juliana Valério (UFRJ), who organized this volume. The articles in this volume were submitted on April 29, 2012, accepted for publication on June 07, 2012, with the final version submitted on June 13, 2012.
