Activities for Teaching Computer Ethics
Abstract
The social impacts of the development of computer systems have become more evident in recent years, and have affected the lives of ordinary citizens in several aspects. Training a professional aware of these impacts would help to enhance the positive aspects and mitigate the negative aspects of computational technologies. In this work, we present a proposal for teaching Computer Ethics that aims to encourage students' critical thinking, in a broader scope than simply discussing ethical issues restricted to the field of computing. We want students to have contact with different schools of philosophical thought and, at the end of the course, be able to relate them to issues they may encounter in their professional life. We report here the methodology and activities we developed and an evaluation of the students who participated in this course.
