Game mechanics for educational games and its influence on User Experience: a comparative analysis
Abstract
The wide inclusion of smartphones in the daily lives of children and adolescents has resulted in the possibility of using applications related to many educational goals, such as expanding knowledge about the history and evolution of the world. However, game mechanics and the insertion of advertising along the interaction flow may disrupt the User Experience. For this review, we selected two mobile games: a quiz on world history and a simulation game of the evolution of species in Earth. An adaptation of the SAMCurve artifact was used, along with the collection and analysis of participants’ impressions throughout the experience with each game. The results indicated that usability problems identified in the first game, in addition to the insertion of advertising, seem to have negatively impacted the users' experience. The artifact used, along with the analysis of the mentions made by the participants, proved to be adequate to indicate the positive or negative evolution of the affective states of the participants throughout the experience with the two games.
