The Proceedings of the 18th Brazilian Symposium on Software Engineering (SBES 2004) bring the papers selected and presented in the edition of the event held in Brasília/DF, from October 18-22, 2004, as part of the 19th Brazilian Symposium on Databases (SBBD 2004). In this issue, the proceedings include 18 full papers. These papers were selected through a peer-review. The event's program committee was coordinated by Jaelson Freire Brelaz de Castro, who organized this volume. The event's organizing committee was coordinated by Murilo Silva de Camargo.
