Factors that Influence Female Participation in Programming Competitions

Abstract

Programming competitions are essential for developing skills such as logical reasoning and teamwork. However, female participation in these competitions remains significantly lower than male participation, reflecting persistent barriers faced by women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. This study combines qualitative methods, through interviews, and quantitative methods, through questionnaires, to identify the main factors that discourage female representation. It was found that factors such as intense routines, lack of training, and lack of knowledge about the format of the competitions are barriers to female participation in these events.
