An Approach to Strategic Portfolio Management with a Focus on Project Selection
Abstract
In order to seek to increase the success rate of projects and increase the effectiveness of management, it is necessary to promote the strategic alignment of projects to the interests of the organization. This can be achieved with an adequate management of the project portfolio in order to maximize the benefits and minimize the risks arising from the execution of the projects. This work presents a process to support strategic portfolio management, by identifying the rules of portfolio governance, identifying and categorizing projects, selecting, prioritizing and balancing the portfolio, maintaining the pipeline and closing the projects. The process was built based on the best project, program and portfolio management practices found in the literature and adheres to the ISO / IEC 12207: 2008 project portfolio management process.
