Image registration applied to estimation of the coupling angle between tractor vehicles and semi-trailers +
Abstract
Accurate estimation of the coupling angle between a tractor and a semitrailer is crucial for the control of autonomous and semi-autonomous articulated vehicles. In freight transport scenarios, it is particularly important to estimate this angle without instrumenting the semitrailer. Existing methods in the literature often suffer from limitations such as dependence on trailer geometry, the need for recalibration at each coupling, sensitivity to weather conditions, or proprietary constraints. This paper proposes an image registration-based method for coupling angle estimation that addresses these issues and can be extended to support trailer approach maneuvers.
