RARP: An Integrated Routing, Resource Allocation, and Protection Algorithm with Service Differentiation in SDM-EONs
Abstract
The rapid growth of optical traffic has increased the need for SDM-EON architectures that jointly optimize routing and resource allocation while providing differentiated protection. This paper proposes RARP (Routing, Allocation of Resources, and Protection), a unified algorithm that combines distance-adaptive modulation, shared protection with Failure-Independent Path Protecting (FIPP) p-cycles, protection-as-primary, and priority-aware preemptive protection. Simulations on the USA and NSF topologies show that RARP reduces bandwidth blocking by up to ≈ 70% compared to state-of-the-art algorithms, while maintaining differentiated protection per class and improving energy efficiency under high load.
