The Proceedings of the 1st Workshop of Applied Computing for the Management of the Environment and Natural Resources (WCAMA 2009) bring the papers selected and presented in the edition of the event held in Bento Gonçalves/RS, Brazil, from July 20 to 24, 2009, as part of the 29th Brazilian Computing Society Congress (CSBC 2009), which had the theme "The Grand Scientific Challenges and the Impacts of Computing on Society." In this issue, the proceedings include 14 full papers and 03 short papers. These papers were selected through a peer review. The event's program committee was coordinated by Diana Francisca Adamatti (FURG), who organized this volume. The articles in this volume were submitted on 03/20/2009, accepted for publication on 04/29/2009, with the final version submitted on 05/18/2009.
