Advances on accessibility issues at the Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems - IHC

Abstract

Context: In 2021, the Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems (IHC) created an accessibility coordination team for the event. Since then, several initiatives have been implemented to make the proceedings, the website, and the event venue more accessible. Accessibility and inclusion were already on the agenda in the first edition of the IHC Grand Challenges. In 2024, the theme was reinforced with the proposal of a new challenge, this time addressing the concept of inclusion more broadly. Grand Challenge: Challenge GD 3: Plurality and Decoloniality proposes a critical analysis of the methods and theories used in IHC research and production, seeking a decoloniality perspective on scientific and technological processes, considering the Brazilian and Latin American territorial realities. The authors argue that the process of decoloniality contributes to plurality and thus influences the creation of theories, methodologies, actions, practices, technologies, interactive computer systems, and, consequently, the people who use them. Objective: This position paper presents the advances of the IHC community in this area, especially in its symposium, one year after the challenge was proposed.
