Estimation of Bone Age: A Comparison Between Values Obtained with Active Contour Snakes Methodology and Mean Values Obtained with Eklof & Ringertz, Tanner & Whitehouse, and Greulich & Pyle Methods
Abstract
AIM: The aim of this work was to evaluate bone age assessment by the simplifications of Eklof & Ringertz methodology. METHODS: There were used hand radiographic images of 631 children and adolescents (boys and girls; age: 6-16 years) in order to obtain the skeletal age assessment using Eklof & Ringertz simplifications – E&R5 and E&R3 (5 and 3 hand bones ossification centers). RESULTS: The results were analysed using the Multiple Linear Regression test and the t-Student test (5%), concerning the average of three classical methods. CONCLUSION: It is possible to conclude that both proposed simplifications (E&R3 and E&R5) are appropriate for bone age estimation, using fast e simplified configuration, with similar results to the average of the traditional methods.
