The Proceedings of the 8th Medical Informatics Workshop (WIM 2008) bring the papers selected and presented in the edition of the event held in Belém/PA, Brazil, from July 12 to 18, 2008, as part of the 28th Brazilian Computing Society Congress (CSBC 2008), which had the theme "Grand Challenges of Computing." In this issue, the proceedings include 22 full papers and 08 short papers. These papers were selected through a peer review, from a total of 51 full papers and 43 short papers submitted, which implied an acceptance rate of 43.1% and 18.6%, respectively. The event's program committee was coordinated by Artur Ziviani (LNCC), who organized this volume.
