Analysis of visual attributes of characters in platform games for mobile devices

Abstract

Visual feedback in mobile game is crucial not only to inform the player about their status but also to reinforce the narrative. This is clear in game characters, that usually present different states and narrative roles associated with visual feedback. We report a quali-quantitative investigation of characters’ visual feedback on gameplay videos of six popular mobile platform games. We provide insights about the meaning of different visual manipulations of game characters and a categorization system for character visual feedback.
