The Proceedings of the 17th Workshop on Computing Education (WEI 2009) bring the papers selected and presented in the edition of the event held in Bento Gonçalves/RS, Brazil, from July 20 to 24, 2009, as part of the 29th Brazilian Computing Society Congress (CSBC 2009), which had the theme "The Grand Scientific Challenges and the Impacts of Computing on Society." In this issue, the proceedings include 18 full papers and 09 short papers. These papers were selected through a peer review. This volume was organized by Mirella M. Moro (UFMG) and Simone Martins (UFF), the event chairs. The articles in this volume were submitted on 03/20/2009, accepted for publication on 04/27/2009, with the final version submitted on 05/18/2009.
